Online Book Clubs
It feels so good to be welcoming spring to Neverending Stories. God has blessed us this winter in big and small ways, and we’re looking forward to getting back online with a fun season on storytelling essentials with the help of some great mentor texts— wordless picture books!
Now I know what you’re thinking: how can we read— or study— a wordless book? You’d be surprised how many hours we’ve spent with these stories, and every time we return, we still learn something new! That’s what it means to be a “neverending story.” A neverending story is a text that you long to return to because each time you do, you find new questions to answer, new thoughts to explore, new conversations to have, and new things to learn. We can’t wait to show our Learners just how deeply they can dive into a story of any formatting or size with this season’s wordless challenge. And I think that was part of the reason we decided to launch spring with Picture Book Club instead of the classic novel studies we’ve been hosting offline. The size of a picture book is nowhere near intimidating, so we’re hoping our Learners (especially any reluctant readers out there) can join in with confidence and really have fun with our literary lessons and story discussions.
Our student writers can also learn a thing or two from wordless tales. After all, the infamous writer’s proverb “show don’t tell” is in full form in these entertaining books by author-illustrators. In Picture Book Writers’ Club, we’ll discuss the differences between graphic novels and wordless picture books; we’ll discuss key techniques for visual storytelling. And most importantly, we’ll try to capture the things we’re learning in our own stories. This season may be a great place to start for reluctant writers who aren’t sure about their skills as a storyteller on paper, but love art and love recounting tales either verbally or via comics and illustrations.
And don’t think that learning stops when you grow up. For any parents out there who are interested in studying these ideas with us, we’d love for you to join us for Family Picture Book Club! My sisters and I know what it’s like to come from a family who loves doing things together. We’re really excited to meet you and your Learners where you’re at, so whether you need 1-on-1 training for your large homeschool book club or you’re ready to sit in with the kids, we hope you’ll also join us. We have a lot of fun and point every lesson back to the Lord!

My sisters and I LOVE watching movies together. Quoting familiar lines conversationally is probably my “annoying habit,” but my sisters don’t mind— especially if I’m quoting Pride & Prejudice.
We all quote this film back and forth to each other because it makes us laugh. It makes us smile. It’s taught us so many great words. And it made us less afraid of reading the actual novel.
